Personal project

Varg

A long-range drone that flies fast while carrying a Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera 4K G2. I took everything I’d learned building FPV drones, and this time I backed it up with real analysis.

A cinema camera is heavy and it sits right in the airflow, so weight, drag and power all have to be worked out together. I modeled the whole drone around the camera in CAD, ran CFD from slow flight up to 150 km/h, and tested motors and ESCs on the bench until a few of them burned up.

Drag at 150 km/h

Two of the runs at 150 km/h. Most of the drag comes from the camera itself.

Background

Before Varg I spent years building and tuning FPV drones from 3 to 7 inches, and designing my own mounts and a hand-launch grip for them.
